The £2.2 million signing from Bristol City comes with bags of Championship know-how, which is another big tick.
Former Blues captain Curtis Davies was a senior professional at Derby County when Bird made his big breakthrough.
And he has continued to follow his career with interest since retiring and becoming a respected pundit, notably for Sky Sports.
