Chris Davies shouldered all the blame after Blues heaviest home defeat since 2014.
The manager admitted that Brentford, who cantered to a 6-1 victory in the Carabao Cup, were streets ahead of Blues in every department.
It was a sobering evening for all at St. Andrew's on what ended Blues bleakest result in front of their own fans since the record 8-0 loss to Bournemouth.
Davies made six changes to his side, giving debuts to Dael Fry and Kristoffer Lund, in the second round tie.
