When Blues secured a pre-contract agreement with Phil Neumann, there was a quiet sense of excitement behind the scenes at EPIC.

The German centre-half had been trailed for some time as Blues liked what the data told them as well as what they saw.

The recruitment department felt Neumann would be an ideal fit for the Championship - big, athletic and very quick.

Blues, in fact, failed with a bid of around £3.5 million for Neumann ahead of the League One season, so concentrated on negotiations to secure him on a free instead when his contract expired.
