John Murtough - Blues new director of football and the task ahead

Forever Blues analyses John Murtough's appointment as the club end their search for Craig Gardner's replacement

It's to be expected that there was a big stick - a few of them, in fact - to beat John Murtough with before he's even got his feet properly under the table at Blues.

Murtough's announcement as Blues director of football brought to an end an exhaustive search which began in June after Craig Gardner stepped aside after five years overseeing strategy, first as technical director.

He has vast experience in the game and spent 11 years at Manchester United, the last three of which were as football director which made him responsible for transfers.

And immediately the expensive signings that came to Old Trafford under his watch and underwhelmed were jumped upon - Jadon Sancho (£73 million), Antony (£82 million), Mason Mount (£55 million) and Rasmus Hojland (£64 million).
